Celebrating 50 Years of Malaysia-China Ties: The Return of Fu Ning to Melaka

In a grand celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China, the world's largest traditional Chinese wooden sailing ship, "Fu Ning," is set to return to Melaka. This majestic vessel will make its second visit to the historic city, echoing the legendary voyages of Admiral Cheng Ho along the Maritime Silk Road.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh announced the special event, extending an invitation to shipowner Lim Cheng Jiu to join the festivities. Fu Ning embarked on its journey from Huangpu in Guangzhou, China, on January 31, arriving in Melaka on May 1.

The impressive ship, measuring 41.6 meters in length, 12 meters in width, and with a main mast height of 29 meters, can accommodate up to 42 people. Built with traditional craftsmanship using teak and rosewood, Fu Ning features a 300kWh onboard power bank, capable of meeting the vessel's electrical needs for a day on a single charge. This ancient wooden boat-building technique from Fuzhou in Fujian province, China, has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding since 2010.

Melaka's deep historical ties with China, dating back over 600 years, make it an ideal venue for this golden jubilee celebration. The state's rich cultural heritage continues to attract Chinese tourists, reinforcing its role as a bridge between Malaysia and China.

As Fu Ning graces Melaka's shores once again, it not only celebrates the historical bond between the two nations but also looks forward to a future of strengthened ties and mutual respect. Join us in Melaka to witness this remarkable event and honor the enduring friendship between Malaysia and China.
