Kupang is the provincial capital of East Nusa Tenggara Province in southeast Indonesia. The city is located in West Timor on the island of Timor, and has a population of around 335,000. It is surrounded by (but is separate from) the KupangRegency (whose capital is also the city of Kupang), which has a population of around 395,000.
The biggest city and port on the island of Timor, Kupang is the centre of government, business, trade and education. The only sandalwood oil factory in Indonesia is located here. Besides its well-known Sandalwood oil, Kupang's economy is mainly based on its cement industry and the export and import of goods through its busy port.
As capital of East Nusa Tenggara, the transport and administrative links between Kupang and isolated islands are extensive. El Tari Airport is approximately 8 km from the city centre.
